Details: The Swamp diggings on Hanging Rock described as singularly situated in a hollowed gully or basin on the top of the Hanging Rock which received waters from the surrounding higher eminences. The water had left a deposit of rich black earth which dried up in summer but formed a swamp of several acres in winter. There was firm footing throughout intersected by narrow channels of running water flowing E and W
